Chincoteague, Virginia is the only resort island on Virginia's Eastern shore.

Sheltered by the much larger Assateague Island, Chincoteague lies between the Virginia mainland near Wallops Island and Assateague Island, which comes down along the Maryland Coast and ends next to Chincoteague Island.

Originally a grazing and livestock range, Chincoteague Island is now a mecca for tourists in search of beaches, wild ponies, oysters, expert Duck Carvers, wildlife artists or just the quiet refuge of a small island community.

A photographer's dream (once called "Gingoteague" or " Beautiful Land Across the Water"), Chincoteague Island offers a plethora of activities that surround the ocean, the Bay or the Wildlife in the refuge.

The year 1856 brought a Post office to Chincoteague Island and a year later the 145-foot Assateague Light was constructed to guard the shoals near Chincoteague. With the rest of Virginia siding with the Confederacy in the Civil War, Assateague Light stayed lit for the Union for the duration of hostilities.

Today the main forms of commerce in Chincoteague are from the sea and from those who seek the sea.

Visitors flock to more than 15 main events on Chincoteague Island each year. Some of these events last more than a week. The Ponies account for most of July's festivals, culminating in the "World Famous" Pony Penning Roundup, Swim and auction in the last week of the month. At other times animals of all sizes can be found in their natural habitats in The Wildlife Refuge.
