The earliest part of this house has been dated to 1665, making it the oldest house in Delaware. It was once an inn.
Its most famous resident was Ryves Holt, who came to Lewes in 1721 and became Naval Officer of the Port of Lewes and High Sheriff of Sussex County.
Holt eventually served as Chief Justice of the Three Lower Counties on the Delaware River and Bay from 1745 until his death.
The Ryves Holt House now belongs to the Lewes Historial Society. Historical Society hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets and tour information are available at the Rabbits Ferry House.
