Beach-Net! Guide to the Delaware-Maryland Beaches

STOP 12
Purple Martin Box

This large field with lots of flying insects is ideal for Purple Martins.

The birds, important mosquito and horsefly predators, have used boxes since pre-Colonial days and have little fear of people.

Hedges beside the food plots offer food and escape cover.

The combination of evergreen and deciduous species provides a balanced diet of berries and nuts, as well as protection from wind and rain.

Japanese Black Pine, Autumn Olive and Staghorn Sumac are planted beside the food plot of soybean, millet and sorghum. Lespedeza and crabapples are around the field.
